Angel Castro comes to Midland College and is only the third head coach in the 22-year history of the Midland College Lady Chaparrals softball program.  Castro was received approval from the Midland College Board of Trustees on December 15, 2020.

Most recently Castro had been the head softball coach at Coastal Bend College in Beeville, Texas (NJCAA Region XIV, Division I).  In her first year at CBC the season was ended after 19 games (13-6 record) due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Angel Castro is a graduate of Haltom High School in Fort Worth, Texas.  At Haltom High she was a four-time all-district selection in softball as well as a four-time all-district academic team member.  Castro also played volleyball at HHS.

Angel began her collegiate playing career at Odessa College in Odessa, Texas (NJCAA Region V).  As a sophomore middle infielder Castro helped lead the team to the 2009 NJCAA Region V West Championship title and a berth in the NJCAA Division I Softball National Tournament.  The team finished 8th nationally that year.

Following two successful seasons at the two-year college level Angel moved on to the University of Texas of the Permian Basin in Odessa, Texas (NCAA Division II) where she put up tremendous offensive statistics for the Lady Falcons, including leading the team in home runs and RBI.  Angel is tied for seventh in career hits at UTPB at 93 (in two only two seasons).

After graduating from UTPB with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology in 2011, Castro joined the staff of Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, New Mexico (NCAA Division II) in 2012.  Coach Castro worked primarily as a hitting and infield coach with the Greyhounds softball program.  Castro earned a Master of Science in Physical Education from ENMU in 2013.

Following her time in New Mexico, Castro joined the softball staff at Paris Junior College in 2013-14 as an assistant coach focusing on hitting, infielders and leading their recruitment efforts.  A year later Castro was named head coach at PJC where she led the Lady Dragons to the 2014 NJCAA Region XIV Tournament.

The next season PJC Castro’s team went 38-20, including going 3-1 in the NJCAA Region XIV Tournament, falling one game shy of earning a place in the 2015 NJCAA Women’s Division I Softball Tournament.  In two seasons as head coach at PJC, Castro amassed a record of 57-44 (.564).

Coach Castro was hired as head coach at Coastal Bend in August of 2019 after leaving PJC going 13-6 in the shortened season.

Castro has a 70-50 (.583) career record, including the pandemic shortened 2020 season.
