SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS - The Midland College Chaparrals baseball team will break the seal on the 2023 season when they take on NJCAA Region 14's Alvin Community College in a three-game series in San Antonio. On Saturday the Chaps and Dolphins are scheduled to play a 3:30 p.m. twinbill at the University of Texas at San Antonio followed by a single game on Sunday. The same two teams met up in the 2022 opener, also at UTSA.
The Chaparrals recorded an impressive 40-20 overall record last season and made it all the way to the NJCAA Region 5 Baseball Tournament championship game before losing to Region 5 and NTJCAC power McLennan Community College.
MC returns 13 team members from last year's team along with transfer sophomores Cody Grebeck (Baylor U) and Ziegen Farley (OLLU). Second year Chaps include: Landon Pyles, Frayner Chavez, Hudson Parker, Evan Herbert, Rhett Clark, Alizaeh Gutierrez, Evan Ballast, Matthew Sandoval, Michael Weidner, Aaron Molina, Josh Doelitsch, Michael Bassett, Michael Lindsey. Barring injuries the Chaps will field a mature pitching staff and a strong middle infield which should propel the team to contention in the highly competitive WJCAC.

Head Coach Hector Rodriguez and assistant coaches Brady Roper and Sean Grebeck will chart the overall direction of the Chaparrals in 2023. Roper was elevated to the full-time assistant position following the departure of Nolan Fanning who left for a position at Oral Roberts University. Roper and Grebeck served as volunteers with the program in 2022.
